The World Rivers Day celebration of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup was on September 25th. What started as a small cleanup by a few Vancouver Aquarium employees back in 1994, has become one of the top 3 cleanup initiatives in the world and the largest conservation effort of the Vancouver Aquarium. Not only does this program keep our beaches beautiful, it encourages the public to actively become involved in protecting our environment. That wonderful effort is taking place every year, right here in our beautiful town!

This year, the Wallmark Homes Team participated to help conquer beach waste on Second Beach and give back to the community we love. Our team joined forces with other volunteers to create a workforce of about 50 people for the cleanup. The day resulted in approximately 5 trashbags full of garbage and even included the rescue of two entangled and very much alive seabirds by one team.
Among the more interesting things found during the cleanup: 468 cigarette butts (cough), 1 tent pole, 13 plastic sheeting/tarps, 1 purse with ID, 2 paper clips and 1 sleeping bag. Just the odd variety of litter on the beach made us a little sad. As a certified Green Built builder, we are very conscious of the earth and doing our part to take care of the resources we have. We want to invite you to take part in next year's activities and remind you to please keep our area beaches beautiful and clean!
